The Young African Leaders' Initiative (YALI) conducts "Connect Camps" in Africa to annually train 160 young entrepreneurs, leaders, and professionals in the areas of Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Leadership and Governance. The Connect Camps will be administered by the IIJ in the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University, and is funded by an annual renewable grant from the U.S. Department of State.
So what does this have to do with me?I worked for the Institute for International Journalism (IIJ) at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism for about three years. The YALI Connect Camps are administered by the IIJ, and I spend a very sizable amount of time each week coordinating the camps. My responsibilities include everything from reaching out to host countries and participants, to booking hotels and conferencing venues, to making lists, keeping track of/managing the budget, recently redesigned our promotional materials, and much more. In May 2015, I traveled to Windhoek, Namibia for the 3rd and 4th Camps, in December 2015, I spent two weeks in Kigali, Rwanda for the 5th and 6th Connect Camps, and in December 2016 I spent three weeks in Dakar, Senegal working on the 9th and 10th Connect Camps.

Promotional materials, redesigned by yours truly.
One of my first assignments working full time on this project was to redesign the YALI promotional materials. Using Adobe Illustrator and InDesign CS6, I created a 24" x 36" poster (on the left), a 24" x 72" banner, and a 3.625" x 8" double-sided informational pamphlet. As a size comparison, I'm 5' tall.
(I've updated the promotional materials again since these photographs were taken.) |
